Is EPF Enough to Retire On in Malaysia?
By Louis Ong · 6 min · 2 Apr 2026
For most Malaysians, no. Only about 36% of active members reach even the RM240,000 Basic Savings level, and EPF's own framework points to around RM650,000 for a comfortable retirement. Topping up with a dedicated retirement savings plan closes the gap.
EPF is a strong foundation — it paid a 6.30% dividend for 2024 — but a strong foundation and "enough to retire on" are two different things.
The numbers most people miss
- Only about 36% of active members reach even the RM240,000 Basic Savings level.
- EPF is raising that target to RM390,000 by 2028, and an "adequate" level is higher still — around RM650,000.
- A single retiree needs roughly RM2,690 a month to live reasonably (EPF Belanjawanku).
Why the gap is bigger than it looks
Malaysians are living longer, and medical costs are rising ~15% a year. Savings that once looked comfortable can run out within a decade of retirement.
Closing the gap
The good news: with time on your side, small monthly top-ups compound significantly. A dedicated retirement or endowment savings plan lets you build steadily beyond EPF — and can bundle protection so your savings continue even if illness or injury stops you working.
