How this calculator works

It works out a target, then compares it with what you're likely to have:

  • Your retirement number: your monthly spending × 12 × 25. Aiming for about 25 times a year of spending is a common rule of thumb that allows for inflation and a long retirement.
  • Minus EPF and savings: what you expect to have when you stop work.
  • Monthly saving: the gap spread over the years you have left, before any investment growth.

It follows the same steps as our guide on how much you need to retire in Malaysia.

A worked example

Someone aged 35 who plans to retire at 60 on RM3,000 a month needs about RM900,000 (RM36,000 × 25). With RM400,000 expected from EPF and savings, the gap is RM500,000, or about RM1,667 a month over 25 years before any growth. (Figures illustrative.)

What it doesn't include

  • Investment growth, which can reduce the monthly amount you need to save.
  • Healthcare costs, which tend to rise faster than general prices as you get older.
  • Whether EPF alone will get you there. For most people it's the foundation, not the whole answer. See is EPF enough to retire.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire in Malaysia?

It depends on your spending and how long you live. A common approach is about 25 times your yearly retirement spending, and EPF's Adequate Savings level is RM650,000.

What is the 25 times rule?

It's a rule of thumb: multiply a year of retirement spending by 25 to get a target that allows for inflation and a long retirement. It's a starting estimate, not a guarantee.

Why does the calculator leave out investment growth?

To keep the estimate conservative and easy to follow. Growth on your savings can reduce the monthly amount you need, which we can work through with you in a free review.

Is EPF enough to retire on?

For many Malaysians EPF is the foundation but not the whole amount: as of May 2026, only 38.3% of active members were on track for its RM390,000 Basic Savings level.
